Important InformationAbsence/ Late arrivalsYou are required to contact the school before 8.50am if your child will be absent. All late arrivals are to report to the office for a late slip before attending class. AccidentsThe class teacher, duty teacher or Tangata Manaaki attends to any accidents in the playground or classroom involving possible injury to a child. Breakfast in SchoolsStudents are provided with a healthy breakfast 5 days a week from 8.15am to 8.50am. (Kindly provided by the Kickstart Breakfast programme) Civil DefenceIn the case of a Civil Defence emergency, the usual evacuation procedures will be carried out and all tamariki will remain at kura until whānau can be contacted and then able to collect them. Fruit in SchoolsAs part of the Fruit In Schools programme, we receive fresh fruit throughout the year to distribute to all of our students in both Pou Tahi and Pou Rua. Hui-ā-KuraHui-ā-Kura are held every second Friday from 2.30 pm. A different class each week has the opportunity to run Hui-ā-Kura where they present class merits, certificates and announce any pānui. Whānau are always welcome to join us. Whānau RoopuWhānau Roopu Hui are held every second Friday and alternates with Hui-a-Kura. Each student participates and whānau are always welcome to attend. Mahi AhureaThe Mahi Ahurea programme is part of the curriculum here at Te Kura o Kokohuia for all students from Year 1-Year 13. Mahi Ahurea is delivered by an external provider, on a weekly basis. It is instructed within a contemporary context using such methods as Mau Rakau, Poi and Aka. Medical ProblemsWhen enrolling your child please ensure that the teacher and the school are fully aware of any specific medical conditions your child may have. If medication is required during school hours, please sign the consent form and discuss with your child’s teacher. Milk for SchoolsFree milk is provided three days a week.(Kindly provided by the Milk for Schools programme) Pou Atawhai / Social WorkerWe have a part-time social worker at Te Kura o Kokohuia who is involved in mentoring, group work, running programmes and leadership skill development. PūrongoSchool reports/pūrongo, are distributed in Term Two and Term Four and are held in conjunction with parent/teacher conferences. We maintain an open door policy at all times and whānau are welcome at kura anytime. School PānuiNewsletters are sent every Thursday. Please advise on enrolment which distribution method you prefer either hardcopy or email. Special pānui are sent home with the student as required. School StationeryStationery lists will be distributed at the beginning of the year and at the time of enrolment for new students starting in Tau 1. School TransportThe school operates a bus service to collect tamariki from their home in the morning and return in the afternoon. Whaea Julie is our bus driver and the bus collects children from all suburbs of Whanganui within the city limits. In 2017, the bus service is free of charge. SmokefreeTe Kura o Kokohuia is proud to be a smoke-free school which means there is no smoking within our school buildings or grounds. We encourage whānau not to smoke directly outside our school gates or within sight of our tamariki. There is also no smoking when accompanying our kura on school trips, outings or tangi. Sporting ActivitiesBeing actively involved in sports is encouraged at Te Kura o Kokohuia. We currently have teams in the following winter codes: - Netball, Miniball, Basketball, Rippa Rugby and Rugby for boys and girls. Sports Fees$20 per student for all sports that tamariki play for the year. $30 per whānau, per year for siblings who live in the same household and play for Te Kura o Kokohuia. Sports UniformsThe kura provides the team sports uniforms. These uniforms are to be worn with pride when attending all kura sports events. SwimmingOur kaiako provide tuition on basic swimming strokes and safe practices in and around water during the warmer months. It is important that tamariki come prepared for lessons with towel and appropriate swimwear. Please send a note if your child is unable to swim. UniformsIt is compulsory for all students to be wearing the correct uniform each and every day. Please ensure to name all clothing. Tamariki must wear a wide brim hat at playtime and lunchtime during term one and term four.
